What is DAI?
DAI is a decentralized stablecoin operating on the Ethereum blockchain, created and managed by the MakerDAO project in 2017. Unlike centralized stablecoins like USDT or USDC, which are backed by fiat assets held by a central entity, DAI is a "crypto-collateralized" stablecoin generated when users over-collateralize other cryptocurrency assets (e.g., ETH). Its core characteristics are decentralization and algorithmic regulation by code, aiming to maintain a soft peg to the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio. DAI's price stability is maintained through algorithmic mechanisms within its protocol, such as automatic liquidation and stability fees. Although algorithmically regulated, its design of being over-collateralized with crypto assets generally makes it resilient against market volatility. DAI is widely used as a fundamental currency for lending, borrowing, trading, and payments within the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) ecosystem. Other decentralized stablecoins similar to DAI include Frax Finance (FRAX) and Liquity (LUSD).
